Let’s Think

The idea of putting questions to you that will make you think, itself made me think for a while about what do I think can make someone think, and is what I think, right? I thought about what makes me think, then thought about what can make you think, and then I started thinking about the process of thinking. This was quite a tongue twister; and even tongue twisters make you think, don't they? They make you think of how to go about saying them! Before this thought on 'thinking' becomes long, I am thinking of putting forth my first question that will make you think. The question is, Can you stop thinking? Think of this!

Questions that make you think can be entertaining starters for a discussion or a meeting. They can serve as icebreaker questions in formal or informal gatherings. They can invite interest and serve as 'thoughtful' stress busters. Funny or silly questions that make you think can spice up your get-togethers. Some serious yet interesting questions that make you think can give a witty touch to your gatherings. Here are some questions to think about! They will surely make you think.

  • How does glue not stick to the inside of the bottle?
  • Does fuzzy logic tickle?
  • What do you plant to grow a seedless watermelon?
  • Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected become the expected?
  • How do you tell when you are out of invisible ink?
  • Why is 11 not pronounced as 'onety one'?
  • If the world is a stage, where is the audience sitting?
  • Why is 'abbreviation' such a long word?

If yesterday were today, then wouldn't today be yesterday?

On occasions of informal gatherings, you can put to the audience really silly questions, which will make them think. Silly questions can create humor, as they don’t let you stop thinking even when you try not to think of them! Such questions can be fun. Here are some of those brain-tickling questions.

  • Can you cry under water?
  • Isn't the best way to save face to keep the lower part shut?
  • Money does not grow on trees then why do banks have branches?
  • Why do feet smell and noses run?
  • What would a chair look like if your knees bent the other way?
  • Babies wake up almost every two hours or so, then why say, "sleep like a baby"?

Some serious yet interesting ones can be used to start semi-formal or formal meetings. They can be made a part of discussions. They may not be funny but they indeed make you give the topic a serious thought. Here are some of those types.

  • What does financial independence mean? Is it about having millions or simply being able to have a holiday without worrying about how to pay for it?
  • What do you believe is the greatest unsolved mystery of all?
  • Are you happy?
  • If a book on 'How to achieve success?' is a failure, is it a success?
  • If nothing is perfect, how can practice make man perfect?

There can be many more interesting questions. You will have to think creatively to devise your own. Some are subjective. They depend on the interpretation of an individual. Rather, an answer to almost any question depends on the notions and opinions of the individual answering it. The answers mostly depend on the person’s process of thinking. It is because of this fact that there exist questions that make you ‘think’. Do you think these questions were questions that made you think? Yes, this is another question that can keep you thinking! Isn't it? Let me know what you think by emailing (editor@sinaiweekly.com).

Homeopathy In Sharm

When you visit the doctor, he will ask you what is wrong. "My foot hurts," you might say, and the doctor will lift the foot and look at it from all angles.
He has seen this before. Within 15 minutes, he will learn all of the details he needs to make a diagnosis. He will write on a pad, hand you a slip of paper, and you will hobble out the door. This is how medicine is done, right?
Why is it then, that for the same complaint, a homeopath will require that you sit in her office for at least an hour? Why will she ask you about your childhood, your dreams, your preferences for food, and so on?
What are these tiny white pills she has recommended you, and why do they have a name that sounds so strange?

Do You Believe In The Evil Eye?

Hello Muriel,

Do you believe in the evil eye?

 Thanks,
Mona

Dear Mona,
I don’t think it is about belief; it is more about respect and acceptance for other people’s beliefs. It is not about my opinion either as opinions become diluted with age.
The ‘Evil Eye’ is believed by many cultures to be able to cause bad luck or injury on the person to whom it is directed.
The concept and significance of it varies widely between cultures, but for me the psychodynamics are of ‘envy.’
It has been mentioned several times in the Bible and is also mentioned in the Koran.
