Memoirs of a Sharmer

The man started to tell me about how he had started up his business a long time ago and how he had originally had big hopes. Then five months ago, he had planned on having a big hotel and had already booked it up for the next year, hired staff and organized parties. However, all his hopes came crashing down when he couldn’t get a permit for the hotel...
Well, it seems that he certainly learnt one of life’s harsh lessons, which is: “Do not count your chickens before they are hatched”.
The next day, I was walking to the supermarket to get my weekly’s shopping when I bumped into this man along the way.
He looked really familiar but I just could not place where I had seen him before. Anyway, I quickly apologized for colliding with him. He answered in Italian, even though I could have sworn he looked Egyptian. However, in Broken Arabic and English we started a conversation. He said that he had only recently moved to Sharm, and that he is Italian and has lived there all his life. His father is a successful business man in Italy and owns many companies.
He then went on to explain his scruffy experience, and how he had been locked out of his apartment the night before by his Russian girlfriend who went away for the weekend and had forgotten to leave him the key.
I don’t really like show-offs and this one seemed to be one of the worst. However, there was something about him that made me unsure; unsure of what he was saying... then it suddenly dawned on me where I had seen him before. This man standing before me stating that he was an Italian and babbling on about his rich Italian father was none other than the son of our old school watchman who certainly wasn’t Italian!
Disgusted with the man, I waved him goodbye and walked off. No sooner had I done this, a police car came racing round the corner. To my surprise, they stopped in front of the man and arrested him for being an Italian living in Sharm with an expired Visa and no work permit...
Well, “Those who pretend to be what they are not, sooner or later, find themselves in deep water”

Homeopathy In Sharm

When you visit the doctor, he will ask you what is wrong. "My foot hurts," you might say, and the doctor will lift the foot and look at it from all angles.
He has seen this before. Within 15 minutes, he will learn all of the details he needs to make a diagnosis. He will write on a pad, hand you a slip of paper, and you will hobble out the door. This is how medicine is done, right?
Why is it then, that for the same complaint, a homeopath will require that you sit in her office for at least an hour? Why will she ask you about your childhood, your dreams, your preferences for food, and so on?
What are these tiny white pills she has recommended you, and why do they have a name that sounds so strange?

Real Estate In Sharm

Over the past few years the resorts surrounding the Red Sea have witnessed a property boom which parallels those of Spain and Dubai in recent times. At the forefront of this increase in demand is the resort of Sharm El Sheikh, ideally situated on the southernmost tip of the Sinai Peninsula. Buoyed by a rapidly expanding tourist industry, Sharm El Sheikh is today one of the most popular destinations for people looking to purchase a property in Egypt.

Do You Believe In The Evil Eye?

Hello Muriel,

Do you believe in the evil eye?

 Thanks,
Mona

Dear Mona,
I don’t think it is about belief; it is more about respect and acceptance for other people’s beliefs. It is not about my opinion either as opinions become diluted with age.
The ‘Evil Eye’ is believed by many cultures to be able to cause bad luck or injury on the person to whom it is directed.
The concept and significance of it varies widely between cultures, but for me the psychodynamics are of ‘envy.’
It has been mentioned several times in the Bible and is also mentioned in the Koran.
